 |  UK Prepares For The Legalization Of Online Casinos

One of Britain's top TV shows, BBC's Panorama, will air this week a program dedicated to the current state of online casinos, less than a year before the Gambling Act comes into force in the United Kingdom. According to the show, an average of 5.8 million people gamble on online casino sites every month between April and September, with May leading the list with more than 6 million. All the data was collected by the market research company Nielsen/Net Ratings, and the numbers shown are much higher than those released by the government's Gambling Commission, who reported only one million regular gamblers at online casinos.
As a reminder, the Gambling Act, which will come into force by September 2007, will legalize online casinos at the UK, and it has already raised a lot of debates in the country. The Gambling Commission will be responsible for regulating the online casino sites, as well as approving various operations and trying to prevent organized crime. If all goes as planned, in 10 months from now online casinos will be totally legal as land-bases casino in the UK.
But not everyone in the UK is happy with the legalization of online casinos in the country. Psychologist Professor Jim Orforf of Birmingham University recently called the decision "naïve" and declared that if no appropriate measure will be taken, more than one million gamblers a year could become addicted. At the other hand, Richard Caborn, the British Minister of Sports assured that government will "protect the vulnerable, keep online casinos crime free and insure fair betting". |
