Online casinos advertisements are under assault in Northern Ireland following the revelation that online gambling ads appeared on the website of Ulster TV (UTV), which happens to provide internet services for thousands throughout Northern Ireland. The website reportedly had an ad that stated ‘Join the world's largest online Poker Room,’ which led many to surmise that the sponsoring company was online poker giant Party Poker, owned by the online gambling Party Gaming corporation which has seen its share prices rise and fall dramatically in recent months since going public on the London Stock Exchange. Local newspapers carried stories that Christian clergy in the province were extremely unhappy with the online casinos advertisements.
Says the Reverend David McIlveen, “They (UTV) are trying to create a strong and constructive family image, yet these online casinos ads are highly destructive. The inclusion of any temptation to gamble is reprehensible - gambling at online casinos, at any casinos, can ruin lives. I believe they need to review this because it's not as if they need the extra revenue.” Ulster TV has a total of 22 radio stations as well as that internet service, and last year it bought The Wireless Group, which owns Talksport, Britain's national radio sports station, and 16 independent local radio stations for 97 million British pounds.
If online casinos ads are facing that kind of backlash in Northern Ireland, how much more so could such advertising cause a backlash in the United States, especially in the Bible Belt where “fire and brimstone” church ministers exhort those in the pews that virtually everything they do that isn’t acceptable to the ministers themselves is a hell-worthy trespass. Online casinos are eagerly awaiting the day, which may or may not soon come, when they are legally able to conduct business and advertise in the United States of America. They might want to take a look at what’s happening in Northern Ireland, and reassess things a bit. |
