 | Legalized online casinos gambling could be coming to NZ
24 Aug 2005
In what could be a boost to those fighting for the legalization of online casinos gambling in various countries worldwide, a landmark decision from New Zealand Lotteries could pave the way for online gambling gaining greater legitimacy with governments. The breakthrough has been made thanks to a recent deal between a U.S.-based technology provider called G-tech and NZ Lotteries that will entail G-tech refreshing New Zealand’s 1,450 Lotto terminals followed by the introduction of “remote interactive gambling” sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries.
Remote interactive gambling, or RIG, has often been provided to users over the internet in various countries around the world. Should the New Zealand Lotteries decide to provide such content over the internet instead of, say, in the form of mobile phone gambling it would mark tacit state approval of internet gambling and it isn’t difficult to imagine that online casinos and other gambling sites would take advantage to press the case that if the New Zealand Lotteries can offer online gambling services over the web, they (the online casinos sites or sports books) would also be able to do so too. New Zealand’s big neighbor, Australia, might also face internal pressure to follow New Zealand’s example or else risk gambling companies moving their operations to the smaller island nation and potentially depriving Australia a piece of the lucrative online casinos gambling revenue pie.
While it is not yet clear that RIG will come to New Zealand anytime soon in a form which could benefit online casinos companies, the Lotteries could be setting a precedent that would change the face of internet gambling for some time to come. New Zealand Lotteries spokeswoman Helen Morgan-Banda says “Where RIG has been offered overseas, it has often been provided over the internet as well as through dedicated networks. Whether it is offered over the internet here will be the subject of further negotiation, but we have the legal right to offer interactive gaming, under the Gambling Act.”
