Apparently you can take online casinos gambling marketing too far, as Paddy Power learned this week when popular opposition to their casinos ads depicting Jesus and the Apostles playing poker at the Last Supper forced the company to pull the ads in 89 locations across the Irish capital of Dublin. In the ad, which was a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous piece “The Last Supper”, Christ is shown with poker chips around him and the Apostles on either side of him are in some form or another holding cards, and the infamous traitor Judas had his 30 pieces of silver showing as well…no word on whether they were taken as a bribe or won against Jesus from a good hand.
The online casinos ads were meant as a tongue in cheek ploy to increase visitation to their online casinos website, but Paddy Power miscalculated that the heavily Roman Catholic environs of Dublin would be fertile ground for such “blasphemous” marketing strategies. In general, online casinos have tried to push the edge of marketing tactics because their fringe position both on the internet as in the wider gambling industry means that while they have money coming in traditional advertising methods are not seen as being all that effective.
Following the removal of the Last Supper casinos ads, Paddy Power put up ads which stated “There's a place for fun and games. Apparently this isn't it.”. A sign of a bruised ego, perhaps, but there is a shred of truth in that diatribe. The Last Supper, while considered a religious piece, is a part of popular culture that authors, movie makers, comedians and others around the globe have taken shots at mocking or using to their own advantage. Online casinos are not the first to “misuse” the Last Supper and they won’t be the last, but times like this call for the Irish to simply take what is meant to be a joke as a joke. |
