Gambling online is one of the world’s most popular internet activities, but it hasn’t always been so. For a long time, it seemed as if web searches were the internet’s most prosperous businesses. Then all sorts of online businesses sprung up and then came crashing down with the “dot com” bust of several years ago. But are online casinos the mammals to the “dot com” busted “dinosaurs”? By their original obscurity, did online casinos prosper at the expense of other online business ventures?
This is difficult to determine, in that online casino companies can be held no more responsible for the dot com bust than the businesses themselves that contributed to the bubble which ultimately burst. Gambling is popular in and of itself; it is only natural that as technology improves people are going to try and take advantage of it to try and make money off of it, and when it comes to the internet, online casinos are no different. Pair up gambling and internet technology and accessibility and you have a recipe for success when it is done right.
Would online casinos have survived the dot com bust, or suffered along with it had they been as popular when it occurred as they are now? Given that gambling is much older than the internet, it is likely that online casinos might have suffered but would have managed to eke out some revenue until the environment was rich and ripe enough to reach the level of prosperity that they now have. |
