In the sometimes surreal online gambling world that exists in the United States, the state of Connecticut has ordered the closure of an online gambling site just one month after the state's Division of Special Revenue ordered a web promotion removed from an internet site on the allegations that it was considered to be promoting online gambling. Online casinos gambling is considered illegal by the Department of Justice, though instances of crackdowns on the use or operation of online casinos sites is rare given the priorities of combating crime, drug use and prosecuting the war on terrorism for the DOJ.
The prohibition of online casinos gambling is based on a 1961 federal statute that prevents the use of phone lines for placing bets, which made the Connecticut decision that much more stupefying with statements from the Special Revenue Division such as came from the executive director of that office, Paul Young: "In Connecticut you cannot use the Internet for online gambling. Period. Telephone gambling is OK." In a country where federal law usually outranks/trumps state laws, that a federal law banning telephone gambling is essentially refuted by the Division of Special Revenue of Connecticut is perplexing, to say the least. The online casinos gambling site which was shut down recently was owned by Penn National Gaming Inc.
Online consumers from Connecticut are not able to place bets on sites like eBet USA following the decision to bar that online casinos betting site; two years ago the Connecticut state lottery was prohibited from launching an internet gambling game due to the strange amalgamation of state and federal law there. While it is doubtful that the barring of online casinos gambling in Connecticut will lead to any crackdowns or arrests or penalties further than the shutdown of certain online casinos sites, the decision brings to light once again the need for a sane set of online gambling laws and regulations applicable to the whole United States.
